I've been attending nearly since the beginning ( 8 years now!) just missing the first 2 discussions. We are reading A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini for July. Mr. Hosseini is a good old fashioned storyteller who gets you interested on the first page and introduces you to a cast of distinctive characters right away. I've only read 45 pages so far but am enjoying his rhythm and skill.

Last month our group read Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver, a discussion I was sorry to miss, and next month is The Reluctant Mr. Darwin by David Quammen.

I am also reading Early Candlelight by Maud Hart Lovelace, Little Sugar Addicts by Kathleen DesMaissons, Collapse by Jared Diamond, The 2010 Meltdown by Edward Gordon, and The Foundation Trilogy (for the 3rd time) by Isaac Asimov. I am an unabashed reader of old fashioned stuff so its lucky for me that I found a group that will keep my contemporary fiction knowledge more up to date and I'm lucky too, to be working in a library.

katcall

Comments on lesson 1

The 71/2 steps were a good review. It's been easy lately to go into reactive mode and just respond to the problems that are coming fast and furious into my life right now. Sometimes you just have to do that but I have to guard it from getting chronic. So 7 simple reminders to stay proactive were much appreciated.

Making the learning contract was revealing. I had the most difficulty just coming up with a goal (much easier to react to something from the outside). Making a list of resources was also hard because I generally don't like to bother people. Easiest to get a grip on was the obstacle section because that's how I've been living. Time for a change.

katcall

Introduction

There is never enough shelf space!
katcall
